His biological father is black - he was an American G.I stationed in Britain, Martin's mother didn't tell him until he was an adult.

I never knew Martin Gore of Depeche Mode was biracial. Gore is the principal songwriter for DM. I have been a DM fan since the early 80s. It was a missed opportunity for DM to present as an all-white group when the lyricist of "People Are People" is mixed race. I think it could have expanded its audience

R55 And Justin Timberlake is completely white despite him trying to dance and sing like a black person.
by Anonymous | reply 57 | February 16, 2022 4:03 AM |
R35 It’s genetics.
I’m biracial, my Dad and family are dark skinned but I came out incredibly white. Mariah Carey / Slash / Pete Wentz white, not Martin Gore / Halsey white.
Martin Gore is half Black American (African American) which means there’s a high chance of European genetics.
My fathers family has Irish genetics and my Mom is Irish. On my DNA tests, I’m 60% Irish.
That’s usually how biracial kids come out so white / light because there’s already white in the black genes.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | February 16, 2022 4:13 AM |
R58 That's true. I read on Twitter that Halsey's father is only half black himself, so that would make her only a quarter black.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | February 16, 2022 4:16 AM |
R58 Yet mixed people still want to call themselves black and insist on others doing the same. If you're more white than black, then how are you going to call yourself black?
by Anonymous | reply 60 | February 16, 2022 4:19 AM |
How about celebrities that you thought were mixed but are not?
mine is Rita Ora.
by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 16, 2022 4:27 AM |
R60 Usually biracial people identify as black because that’s how people perceive them and they’re fine with it.
The one drop rule is still a social perception in the US. White people are gatekeepers of whiteness and skin color is still judged.
White people will never look at Obama as white or refer to any biracial as a white person.
So I dunno what you’re talking about.
Personally as a biracial, erasing Mulatto was disappointing. A lot of biracial people I know still identify as Mulatto, including myself. Black / white ancestry is an American mix and biracial people have notably been progressive in civil rights throughout American history and it’s kind of all been erased. That’s how I see it.

by Anonymous | reply 64 | February 16, 2022 4:59 AM |
R58 I'm also mixed and it's the same with me. I have enough ethnic features so that people know I'm something other than white, but they never guess that I'm half black. People have named all kinds of different countries they thought I was from. Usually either a Hispanic or Arabic country.

Datalounge is completely obsessed with race. I think this is the only place I've seen the designation "white-adjacent." According to DL rules of racial categorization even some white people are not white, so anyone with recent Black ancestry is never gonna be white.

[quote]Datalounge is completely obsessed with race. I think this is the only place I've seen the designation "white-adjacent."
It's mostly the work of just one indefatigable troll (best known as the Yellow Skin Troll), who has been here for more than a dozen years. He is obsessed with the idea of famous white people secretly being mixed-race, and will post about it constantly, sometimes self-satirically, but usually seriously. He is the troll who constantly uses the phrase "white-adjacent."

It would be interesting to know how a lot of these people are biracial. I remember being surprised to learn Mark Paul Gosselar is half Fillipino.
Also, Jake Cannavale (son of Bobby, who has appeared in The Mandalorian and other shows) is part black (his great grandmother is Lena Horne).

Chet Hanks likes to believe he’s half Black, but that’s just his wishful wigger thinking.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | February 17, 2022 4:54 AM |
R74 Well because of slavery and Jim Crow.
I’m 34, my grandfather died in 2019 but my Grandma is in her late 70’s and they both grew up in the Jim Crow South. My Dad is in his 50’s and was born in a segregated hospital in Memphis.
Technically I’m the first born in my direct lineage to have been born outside of Jim Crow laws in my family. I’m 34.
Yeah it’s been 57 years since segregation ended but that’s not a lot of generations to be so far removed from the colorism this country has had for 400 years.
That’s why the US is the way it is. And the fact that they have a group of people who’s families have been here for 400 years and they’re still looked at as foreigners, even by European immigrant families who came over in the 1920s - 1960s.

Pretty and accomplished young British footballer Trent Alexander-Arnold is half black immigrant Brit (father), half white American (mother). The black half definitely won that genetic battle.
It's hard to guess from where his father originally comes, and there is no information made public on the internet about that, but from the age of Mr. Arnold and the time of his arrival in Britain (c. mid-late 1970s-early 80s), and from how Trent and his brothers look it's safe to say it's probably a Windrush Caribbean ethnic/national background.
What's even funnier about Trent is that he doesn't share an accent with either parent; he's got a strong broad local Scouse (Liverpudlian) accent, from growing up, going to school and later working in Liverpool since childhood. As far as I know as a casual fan, Trent's been to the U.S. maybe once in his entire life Ion tour with his football club), and the Caribbean a few times on holiday. He's very much a proud English lad and not eager to leave or be associated with anywhere else.

^^as a visual check, looking at Trent next to definite ethnic Caribbeans & Africans reveals the likely story.
Here's Trent next to his England national football squad teammate Tyrone Mings, who is of confirmed Bajan ethnicity, and standing close by his other England teammate, Tammy Abraham (full legal name Kevin Oghenetega Tamaraebi Bakumo-Abraham), who is of Nigerian ancestry. It's clear Trent much more shows a light-skinned Caribbean phenotype, hair type and colouring.
